In June, on a sunny late afternoon, twenty-five years ago, two young men, good friends, graduated from the same university in Madrid, Spain. 

They were very much alike. Both had been better than average students, and both – as young college graduates are – were filled with ambitious dreams for the future.

Recently, these old friends met in their 25th reunion after graduation.

They were still very much alike. Both were happily married. Both had children. Both have pets. And both worked in the same industry. 

But there were some subtle differences. 

One of them was manager of a small department of a big corporation in Madrid.

The other was the CEO of a company, board member in a few others, and investor in several others. 

One had a few kilos in excess around his belly. 

The other was fit, relaxed, in control.

One had a couple of holiday periods a year. One in Spain, the other, maybe, with luck, in another European country. 

The other travelled from time to time around the world, sometimes for work, sometimes for pleasure. 

What Made The Difference

Have you ever wondered, as I have, what makes this kind of difference in people’s lives? 

• It isn’t that one person wants success and the other one doesn’t.
• It isn’t that one person works harder than the other. 
• It isn’t that one person has richer parents than the other. 
• It isn’t that one person has more connections than the other. 

The difference lies in what each person knows and how he or she makes use of that knowledge.

Just that.

You see, I’m unique, as you are. Made of bone and flesh, I had my difficulties, my flaws, my failures and a few great successes. 

As teachers, every mentor will let in you a unique footprint.
